This program incorporates the goals and objectives of drug prevention as specified by The Texas Prevention Curriculum Guide: Drug and Violence Education (DAVE) which was developed with Safe and Drug Free School's funds under a grant from the U.S. Department of Education (September '97). During the program, the students will 1.) Gain knowledge essential for making legal, safe and healthy decisions about drug use, 2.) Learn about examples of attitudes and behaviors which prevent drug use, 3.) Learn skills an strategies which will prevent drug use, and 4.) Be encouraged to develop and practice a personal plan to remain drug free. This program can be modified to make it appropriate for all grade levels.
Key Concepts
Students learn:
1.) the potential consequences of drug, alcohol and tobacco use
2.) to deal with peer pressure and feelings
3.) to "Stop and Think" before making decisions
4.) about what drugs actually are
5.) about drugs, alcohol and the law
6.) about the influence of the media in our decision making
7.) the importance of asking for help when you need it (and who to go to)
The 8 Ways to Say No
1.) Politely say "No"
2.) Use the "Broken Record" (say no over and over)
3.) Remind them a good friend doesn't ask you to do something that will hurt you. They like
You for who you are.
4.) Suggest something different (ie. I'd rather go play football. You want to come?)
5.) Give a reason, or excuse (No, I can't. I'm taking my hamster to get a haircut.
6.) Stop and think of the consequences
7.) Stay away from trouble and dangerous places/things
8.) Walk away
