Humble Beginnings
In describing their family, the brothers often mention "our family tree goes straight up" and "we come from the shallow end of the gene pool". The actual truth is that "Homer Morris" was created in college at Southwest Texas State Universtiy by me, James Caldwell, for a "Fraternity Party". It was a "come as your favorite sports star party" and I couldn't think of what to go as, so I went as a professional backgammon player. Homer was a hit, and soon after appeared in an all college musical. Over the next two years, I was asked to have Homer show up for weddings, parties, and other special events. Girls would have be show up as their boyfriend when their parents would come to town. Not a bad way to get a free meal and date during those starving for cash college days! Actually, I later met my wife dressed as Homer while performing at Paul Keyes Elementary in Irving, Texas where she was a music teacher. Soon after college, fraternity brother Mark Culbertson, gave Homer a brother. Rupert was born, and we began showing up around Dallas, Texas as "The Morris Brothers". Newpaper columnist Helen Bryant of The Dallas Times Herald, labeld us "Two of Dallas Most Ubiquitous" people.
Rent - a - Nerd
Later that year, we heard about a contest Q102 Radio station was having to promote the movie "Twins" with Danny Devito and Arnold Swartsnegger. The best set of twins to show up won a trip to see the two on "Saturday Night Live". We won! On our return, we started "Rent a Nerd" which that year "D Magazine" (Dallas) awarded us with "The Best New Service in Dallas" award. Things were getting busy! Our travels took us to The Greek Amphithatre in Hollywood and The Mall of America in Minnesota. We also began performing in comedy clubs.
TV Time
The following fall, we both left our "real" jobs (teacher and sales) to pursue The Morris Brothers full time. It paid off! Not long after that, we became hosts of a daily show on KDAF television in Dallas, Texas called "The Fox 33 Kids Club". Show guests included the likes of Leeza Gibbons, Dyan Cannon, Tanya Tucker, Diamond Rio, The Globetrotters, Christopher Reeves, and Leeann Rimes. During this time, we hooked up with Godfrey Nelson (music producer for the Ninja Turtles) to produce two CD's. Our first single, "Superheroes" was the #8 requested song that year on "Radio Ahhs" (nationally syndicated radio station).
Today
Due to the hectic schedule, Mark decided to become our full time booker and we hired a new brother, Brian Prescott. Brian has been playing the Rupert character for the past 7 years. We continue to perform over 350 shows per year for schools, churches, corporations, conventions and amusement parks. Commercials, industrial films, videos and television are again in the works!
